UofT Robotics Outreach: Mars Rover Navigation 101 at the NSERC Science Odyssey Festival

Ever wonder how robots can drive safely on the surface of Mars? UofT Robotics PhD student Olivier Lamarre will tell you all about it at the 2021 NSERC Science Odyssey festival. On May 12 & 13, you can learn about the Mars rover’s autonomous navigation system and how teams of human experts safely operate it from earth. This talk is available in French and English, and is for all ages and anyone interested in learning more about planetary navigation – no technical background needed.

Olivier studies planetary navigation with the Space and Terrestrial Autonomous Robotic Systems Laboratory (STARS Lab) at the University of Toronto. His research investigates new ways to let rovers safely navigate autonomously over long distances. As part of his work, he conducted research at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for more than a year, where all Mars rovers have been operated from to this day.
